Versus Arts is pleased to present Beyond the Mask, Behind the Self, a solo exhibition by visual artist Ayşe Bayram, on view from28 Marchto4 April. Curated by İlayda Uzunarslan, the exhibition brings together a body of works created primarily in watercolor, featuring masks, portraits, surreal linear forms, and imagery shaped by subconscious associations.Ayşe Bayram’s artistic practice merges the discipline of traditional watercolor with the fluid, layered terrain of the subconscious. Using the unpredictable movement of water and pigment on paper as both a technical and conceptual force, Bayram explores the tensions between identity, visibility, concealment, social roles, and the inner self. In this exhibition, masks emerge not only as symbols of disguise, but also as markers of protection, transformation, and the complex relationship between the individual and their inner world.Beyond the Mask, Behind the Self invites viewers to look beyond the surface and reflect on the fragile boundary between the visible persona and the hidden or protected inner reality. Through portraits, surreal details, and intuitive forms, the exhibition creates a quiet yet powerful space of confrontation with the fragmented nature of the self.
Based in Muğla, Turkey, Ayşe Bayram graduated from the Department of Art Education at Cumhuriyet University in 2007. Alongside her long-standing role as an art educator, she has developed a distinctive visual language that expands the expressive possibilities of watercolor through psychological and spiritual depth. A member of the International Watercolor Society (IWS), Bayram continues to share her work with wider audiences through international exhibitions and projects in London.More than an aesthetic experience, Bayram’s work invites viewers to reflect on their own inner masks, vulnerabilities, and potential for transformation.
Ayşe Bayram (b. 1982, Mersin) is a visual artist and educator based in Muğla, Turkey. A graduate of the Department of Art Education at Cumhuriyet University (2007), she has developed a practice that bridges the discipline of traditional techniques with the expansive, intuitive language of the subconscious.Working primarily in watercolor, Bayram embraces the fluid and unpredictable movement of water and pigment to explore the layered, performative, and often fragmented nature of human identity. Her works trace the tension between social roles and inner realities, opening contemplative spaces where the viewer is invited into a subtle confrontation with the self.Informed by her ongoing research into the neuro-phenomenological dimensions of art, Bayram approaches painting as both a cognitive and spiritual act. As a member of the International Watercolor Society (IWS), she continues to present her work internationally, including projects in London, expanding a distinctive visual language shaped by introspection, transformation, and the universal narratives of the subconscious.
